The castle which currently dominates the village was built in the nineteenth century by the family of Lacvivier and Delacroix around the remains of a tour, probably erected in the twelfth century by the abbey to protect the population and store crops and partially destroyed in 1654 by French troops. In 1710, after a terrible flood that destroyed the old church of Saint-Saturnin and a large part of the old village, the abbey offers the inhabitants the lands around the old castle and its chapel Sainte-Marie du Puig , Which then becomes the seat of the parish.
In the nineteenth century, Vernet became a well-known spa due to its sources. In 1834, Monsieur Morat, owner of Les Bains, sold the latter to Messrs. Lacvivier and Courderc, called the Commandants, who were to build the beautiful establishment later called the Ibrahim Pacha Hotel in honor of the stay at Les Bains de Vernet
Professor Lallemand prescribes to his patient, Prince Ibrahim Pasha, son of the Wali of Egypt, in 1846 - the prince will defray the social and social chronicle and endow Vernet with an unknown notoriety. The establishment passes from hand to hand until the arrival of Count Henry de Burnay, rich Portuguese banker of Belgian origin, sole owner in 1888 with the 18 hectares, which finishes the work. It equips swimming pools, bathtubs, dry and underwater massage rooms, humming and spraying rooms, steam baths and baths, etc. In 1899, he built the Grand Hotel of Portugal, the Hotel du Parc and many other buildings. On May 6, 1906, the English weekly The World designated Vernet as the "Paradise of the Pyrenees".
